Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses radioactive substances, electromagnetic radiation, and sound waves to create images of the body, its organs and structures to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries. The different types of images include X-rays, radiant dye, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI, and magnetic resonance images.
There are different specialized areas of radiology. The main ones being Diagnostic Radiology (use of external radiation to produce images of the body, its organs, and other internal structures for medical diagnostic purposes), Nuclear Medicine (use of very small amounts of radioactive materials to create an image of the body, its organ functions and structure, for diagnostic and treatment purposes), Therapeutic Radiology (use of radiant energy to study, treat, and manage cancer and other diseases), and Interventional Radiology (use of various imaging techniques to guide the insertion of small instruments and tools through the body to identify and treat a medical disorder without requiring conventional surgery).
- Radiologists are medical doctors who specialize in the field of radiology. They interpret the images and perform other procedures, such as interventional radiology procedures or therapeutic procedures. Radiologists may act as consultants to other physicians or act as primary doctors in treating a disease (such as radiation oncologists).
