OAHU PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEONS

<<<Back to Oahu Surgeons

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the highly specialized field of surgery concerned with reducing scarring or disfigurement that may be the result of accidents, birth defects, diseases, and in some cases ageing. Often plastic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem. Such surgeries are called cosmetic surgery. A surgeon who specializes in this field is called a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. To be certified as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, a doctor must have passed from a medical school, have at least three years of residency in general surgery, and at least two years of intense training in the full spectrum of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

Following are some of the many reasons for performing reconstructive surgery -

Accidents:

  • Reattach body parts severed due to accidents or combat.

  • Rebuild severely fractured bones.

  • Repair skin and soft tissue in large wounds.

  • Perform skin grafts after severe burns.

Birth defects:

  • Remove birthmarks.

  • Repair cleft lip.

  • Repair cleft palate.

  • Reconstruct abnormal body parts.

Diseases:

  • Reconstruction after cancer surgery.

  • Restore vital movement and function of tissues destroyed by disease.

  • Treat cancerous skin tumors.

  • Treat Thyroid Eye Disease (protruding, irritated eyes)

Ageing:

  • Repair redundant or drooping eyelid skin blocking field of vision.

  • Implant prosthesis to replace arthritic hip and knee joints.

Cosmetic reasons:

  • Remove excess body fat (liposuction)

  • Reshape the nose (rhinoplasty or “nose job”)

  • Removal of wrinkles from face (rhytidectomy or “face lift”)

  • Firming of the abdomen (abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck”)
