Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic dental care for infants, children and adolescents. Pediatric Dentists are dentists who have completed two additional years of full time study and training in Pediatric Dentistry after dental school. They are also called the pediatricians of dentistry as they are specially trained for children's unique dental health needs.
Infants, preteens, and teenagers need different approaches in dealing with their behavior, guiding their dental growth and development, and helping them avoid future dental problems. Pediatric dentists are specially trained to meet these needs. They know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable. They also have specially designed equipment and clinics that have been designed and decorated with children in mind. Pediatric dentists work either independently or in a team with pediatricians, other physicians, and other dental specialists.
Some types of treatments that pediatric dentists provide are;
-
Infant oral health exams.
-
Cleaning and fluoride treatments and other preventive dental care.
-
Nutrition and other diet recommendations.
-
Baby bottle tooth decay (caused by frequent and long exposures of an infant's teeth to liquids that contain sugar)
-
Repair tooth cavities.
-
Early assessment and treatment for straightening teeth and improper bite.
-
Habit counseling – like for thumb sucking or pacifier use.
-
Managing of gum diseases.
-

-
