Pathology is the study of the nature and causes of disease. Pathologists are medical doctors who study pathology. They study the structural and functional effects of harmful stimuli to cell tissues and organs of the body and ultimately their consequences on the entire body. They examine body tissues, secretions and fluids with the use of scientific instruments and analytical measurements and procedures, and by getting to the causes, diagnose the disease.

There are various sub-specialists within pathology. Every specialty in medicine and surgery has a corresponding specialty in pathology. Hence there is forensic pathology, neuropathology, hematology pathology, dermatopathology, and so on. In addition, pathology is divided into two categories – anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathology deals with the tissue diagnosis. Clinical pathology deals with the laboratory test diagnosis.
