Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery - also known as Otolaryngologic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, and most popularly as Ear Nose Throat (ENT) Surgery – is surgery performed on the ear and its parts, nasal cavity, or the throat, including surgery of the adenoids, tonsils, pharynx, and trachea. This surgical specialty has more separate surgical procedures than any other specialty. These may be narrowed down to Adenoidectomy (excision of the adenoids), Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils), Laryngectomy (total or partial excision of the larynx), Tracheotomy (incision of the trachea), Ear or Otologic Surgery (surgery on the ear), and Respiratory Surgery (procedures on the respiratory system) among others. An Otorhinolaryngologic Surgeon is a medical specialist who has specialized in the field of Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery.
Some of the many diseases and disorders treated by an otorhinolaryngologic surgeon are:
- Tonsillitis : Severe infection and enlargement of one or both of the tonsils (masses of tissue at the back of the throat). Symptoms include reddening and swelling of the tonsils, a voice change due to swelling, sore throat, pain, bad breath, and fever.
- Subglottic Stenosis : Acquired narrowing of the subglottic airway, the already narrowest part of the airway, causing breathing difficulty.
- Otosclerosis : Abnormal growth of bone of the middle ear, which prevents structures within the ear from working properly and causes hearing loss. Symptoms are gradual hearing loss, balance problems, dizziness, or ringing in the ears.
- Nasal polyps : Abnormal lesions emanating from any portion of the nasal mucosa or paranasal sinuses. Polyps are usually the result of chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, cystic fibrosis (CF), or allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS).
- Glossopharyngeal neuralgia : A disorder which is the result of compression of the 9th nerve (glossopharyngeal) or 10th nerve (vagus). Symptoms include intense (intermittent or persistent) pain in the tonsils, middle ear, and back of the tongue. Swallowing, chewing, talking, or sneezing triggers pain.
- Vocal cord paralysis : A voice disorder that occurs when one or both of the vocal cords (or vocal folds) do not open or close properly. The paralysis may be caused by head trauma, a neurological insult such as a stroke, a neck injury, lung or thyroid cancer, a tumor pressing on a nerve, or a viral infection. Symptoms are abnormal voice changes, changes in voice quality, and discomfort from vocal straining.
- Cholesteatoma : A skin growth that occurs in the middle ear behind the eardrum. It is usually due to repeated infection, which causes an ingrowth of the skin of the eardrum. Cholesteatomas often take the form of a cyst or pouch that sheds layers of old skin that builds up inside the ear. If untreated, deafness, brain abscess, meningitis, and rarely death can occur. Symptoms include full feeling or pressure in the ear, dizziness, ear drain with foul smell, muscle weakness on one side of the face, and hearing loss.
If you feel you have any of the symptoms mentioned for the diseases given above (which are just a few), or any other kind of discomfort, abnormality, or pain in the ear, nose, and throat area, it would be wise to consult an otorhinolaryngologic surgeon. Given below is a list of otorhinolaryngologic surgeons in Oahu. The list has been compiled for your convenience by Oahu.us.
