OAHU ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS

Orthopedic Surgery is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries and diseases of the bones, joints, and tendons. It is also concerned with the pathology, genetics, intrinsic, extrinsic and biomechanical factors involved with orthopedics. Orthopedic surgeons (also known as orthopedists) are specialists who have completed a 5 year residency in orthopedic surgery after having completed medical school. Many orthopedic surgeons elect to go into further sub-specialty training. These sub-specialties include hand and upper extremity, total joint reconstruction, pediatric orthopedics, foot and ankle, spine surgery, orthopedic oncology, sports medicine, and trauma.

Orthopedic surgeons treat patients using surgical and non-surgical methods to correct musculoskeletal problems. They work either independently, or in association with other health professional like athletic trainers, physical therapists , occupational therapists , rehabilitation physicians , and other physicians in related fields.

Some orthopedic conditions treated by orthopedic surgeons are:

  • Osteomyelitis : Infections of bones and joints.

  • Gout : A condition in which uric acid accumulates in joint fluid. If left untreated it may lead to arthritis.

  • Osteonecrosis : Also called avascular necrosis, it is caused by lack of blood supply to the bones. If left untreated bone cells may die and eventually cause bones to collapse.

  • Osteoporosis : A common orthopedic condition that causes thinning and weakening of bones.

  • Paget's Disease : A bone disease that causes abnormal bone formation, leading to skeletal malformations and abnormalities.
