Obstetrics and Gynecology, or OB/GYN for short, is the field of medicine devoted to conditions specific to women. Obstetrics involves care of women during pregnancy, delivery of babies and follow-up treatment, and gynecology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the female reproductive organs and the reproductive process. Usually physicians specialize in both in order to provide comprehensive care to women, but there are others who prefer to specialize in one field or the other.
There are certain symptoms that a woman should never ignore as they may be due to some major disorder. The symptoms are given below, along with the causes they may be due to:
Lower abdomen pain: Cysts or adhesions in the ovaries; infections or adhesions in the fallopian tubes; infections or stones in the kidneys or bladder; infections in the womb, appendix or intestines.
Abnormal bleeding or menstruation: Benign or malignant growths, infections, or injuries in any of the female organs.
Vaginal discharges: A little discharge is normal, but if it is heavy or abnormal it may be infection.
Other obstetric and gynecological disorders include Ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that implants in a cavity other than the womb like the fallopian tube, ovary, or the cervical canal); spotting; prolapse of the female organs; and abnormal menstruation. Besides these, obstetricians and gynecologists also treat infertility, female cancers, menopausal and other hormonal disorders, as well as diseases of the breast.
Pains or diseases can come anywhere anytime, even when you are on holiday. So if you feel any of the symptoms or pains given above during your visit to Oahu, don't ignore it and hope that it will go away on its own.
