Marriott
International, Inc. is one of the leading worldwide hospitality
companies. As one of the world's strongest brands, Marriott
enjoys outstanding recognition and reputation, and have over
2,600 lodging properties in the United States and 64 in other
countries and territories.
The history of Marriott Hotels starts in the spring of 1927
with the opening of a nine-stool A&W Root Beer stand in
Washington D.C. by J. Willard Marriott and his new bride Alice,
which they later called "The Hot Shoppe". By winter
of the same year hot Mexican food was added to the menu, and
in 1929 Hot Shoppes, Inc. was officially incorporated. In 1934
a branch was opened in Baltimore, Maryland, and in 1937 Marriott
began airline catering business at Hoover Field (currently site
of the Pentagon). This division was named "In-Flite Catering"
and served Capital, Eastern, and American Airlines. Expansion
continued with Hot Shoppes opening more cafeterias in Washington
D.C. and landing feeding contracts with the government. In-Flite
also landed its first airport terminal food-service contract
at Miami International Airport. In 1953 Marriott stocks became
public and within 2 hours all the shares were sold. Expansion
continued fast with In-Flite getting more catering contracts
and more Hot Shoppes opening in various cities.
In 1957, the first Marriott hotel by the name of Twin Bridges
Motor Hotel was opened in Arlington, Virginia. In 1967, the
Corporate changed its name from Hot Shoppes Inc. to Marriott
Corporation and embarked on an expansion spree with the opening
of more food production and purchasing facilities, restaurants,
hotels, and resorts, both in the U.S. and worldwide. The 100th
hotel opened in Hawaii in 1981. The 1980’s also saw the
acquiring of Host International Inc., Gino's, and Residence
Inn Company, and Fairfield Inn, with which Marriott entered
the lower-moderate lodging segment. Expansion continued and
the 500th hotel was opened in 1989 in Warsaw, Poland.
In 1993, the company split into Marriott International, a hotel
management and franchising company, and Host Marriott Corporation,
a hotel ownership company. In 1995 Marriott acquired the Ritz-Carlton
Hotel Company, LLC, and in 1997 the Renaissance Hotel Group
and introduced TownePlace Suites, Fairfield Suites, and Marriott
Executive Residences brands. By 1995, there were 1,500 Marriott
hotels; after 5 years in the year 2000 the 2000th Marriott property
was opened; and then just 2 years later in 2002 the 2,500th
hotel opened in Phoenix, Arizona.
Today Marriott International, Inc. manages and franchises 2,718
hotels and resorts under the Marriott, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton,
Renaissance, Courtyard, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn, TownePlace
Suites, Fairfield Inn and Ramada International brands. Marriott
also develops and operates vacation ownership resorts, executive
apartments and conference centers.
Two of these hotels are in Oahu - Marriott Waikiki Beach in
Waikiki, a Marriott brand; and JW Marriott Ihilani Resort &
Spa at Ko Olina, which is a JW Marriott brand.
