Dentistry
is the science concerned with tooth decay, disease of the supporting
structures such as the gums, and faulty positioning of the teeth.
A dentist is a professional practitioner of dentistry.
To become
a qualified dentist, one has to go through 4-8 years (depending
on the country) of university training, as well as practical
experience in working with actual patients. In the United States,
the degree awarded to dental school graduates is referred to
as either D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery), or D.M.D. (Doctor
of Dental Medicine), depending on which college awards it. In
other countries, the degree is called B.D.S. (Doctor of Dental
Surgery).
Some dentists
go straight into practice after dental school and practice all
forms of dentistry. They are called General Dentists or Family
Dentists. Others undergo additional training and become dental
specialists. It usually requires a further 2-6 years of formal
education and training after dental school to become a specialist.
They also have to pass state and national board examinations.
There
are 8 main kinds of dental specialties, each offering a different
kind of service. These are Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology,
Oral Radiology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics,
and Prosthodontics.
Oahu,
with its quality medical services, has qualified dentists of
all kinds who are capable of diagnosing and treating all kinds
of dental problems. For your convenience, Oahu.us has compiled
