Hertz
Rent-A-Car is the largest car rental company in the world, providing
quality rental service for over 80 years. A wholly owned subsidiary
of the Ford Motor Company, Hertz has set the standard for quality,
reliability and service worldwide. The company specializes in
local car rental at affordable rates, and serves approximately
1,900 locations in the United States and approximately 5,100
international locations. Hertz offers a wide variety of current-model
cars on a short-term rental basis - daily, weekly or monthly
- at airports, in downtown and suburban business centers, and
in residential areas and resort locales. Today, Hertz' Worldwide
Reservations Centers handle approximately 40 million phone calls
and delivers approximately 30 million reservations annually.
The
company was started in Chicago in September, 1918, by Walter
L. Jacobs at the age of 22. This pioneer of auto renting started
with a dozen Model T Fords, which Jacobs repaired and repainted
himself. Within five years the business was generating annual
revenues of about $1 million. In 1923, Jacobs sold his car-rental
concern to John Hertz, President of Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck
and Coach Manufacturing Company, but continued to be Hertz'
top operating and administrative executive. The company was
now called Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System. It was again sold to
General Motors Corporation in 1926. In 1953, Hertz was bought
from GMC by Omnibus Corporation, which divested itself of its
bus interests and concentrated solely on car and truck renting
and leasing. A year later, a new name was given -- The Hertz
Corporation -- and was listed for the first time on the New
York Stock Exchange. Jacobs became Hertz' first President and
served in that post until his retirement in 1960. In 1967, Hertz
Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of RCA Corporation
but operated as a separate entity. In 1985, Hertz joined UAL,
Inc. On December 30, 1987, Hertz was sold to Park Ridge Corporation,
a company formed by Ford Motor Company and certain members of
Hertz senior management for the purpose of purchasing Hertz.
A year later, Volvo North America Corporation joined Ford and
Hertz management as an investor in Park Ridge Corporation. In
1993, Park Ridge Corporation was merged into The Hertz Corporation,
and a year later in 1994, Ford purchased the outstanding shares
of Hertz. Hertz now became an independent, wholly owned subsidiary
of Ford.
Hertz has scored many "firsts" in the car rental industry. Some
of the most notable Hertz “Firsts” are: First Coast-to-Coast
Network in 1925; First Rent-it-Here/Leave-it-There Program in
1933; First European location (France) in 1950; First Centralized
Billing System in 1959; First Booking System for Travel Agents
in 1962; First Club for Frequent Travelers, #1 Club® in
1972; First Express Service in 1980; First Computerized Driving
Directions in 1984; and First Launched World Wide Web Site in
