Thrifty
Rent-A-Car is one of the most widely recognized car rental brands
in the travel industry, catering to the cost-conscious business
and leisure travelers. A wholly owned subsidiary of Dollar Thrifty
Automotive Group, Inc. (NYSE: DTG), Thrifty runs a franchise-based
system, where local owners have a great deal of control over
their business. Through these corporately-owned and franchised
stores, the company operates in more than 1,100 locations
in 64 countries. With a rental fleet of more than 90,000
cars and over 7,500 employees worldwide, Thrifty Rent-A-Car
is today a truly a massive car rental company.
Thrifty
was founded in 1958. In 1987, shares were offered to the public
and it became a public company. Two years later in 1989, Thrifty
was acquired, along with Dollar Rent-A-Car, by Chrysler Corporation.
In 1997 Chrysler divested Thrifty and Dollar, and Dollar Thrifty
Automotive Group, Inc. was formed. DTG now operates as a single
company, while continuing to support and grow both of its two
strong brands independently.
Thrifty
Rent-A-Car uses state-of-the-art automated reservations systems
and has direct links with Apollo (Inside Link) and Amadeus (Complete
Access), as well as seamless connectivity with Worldspan (Car
Source) and SABRE (Direct Connect Availability). Thrifty is
also a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA)
and maintains a travel agent advisory council of nationally
respected leaders in the travel agent community.
An
added Thrifty service is for those looking for a safe and convenient
place to park their cars at the airport. This service is the
provision of more than 14,000 parking spaces in 33 Thrifty locations.
These can be found in most major metropolitan cities such as
Chicago, Dallas (Love Field), Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles,
Phoenix, Seattle, Tampa and Orlando.
Thrifty
offers a variety of value-oriented corporate account programs
for business travelers, like the Guaranteed Rate Corporate Program,
and the Small Business Program. Under these programs companies
