National
Rent-A-Car is one of the largest companies in the car rental
industry serving many popular domestic and international travel
destinations. It has established itself as a company of choice
by providing quality vehicles and service to business and leisure
customers. National Rent-A-Car operates in over 3,000 locations
throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America,
the Caribbean, Asian-Pacific, Africa and Australia. Owned by
Vanguard Car Rental USA Inc., National operates over 275,000
quality vehicles that serve over 15 million travelers annually.
National
was formed on August 27, 1947, as a group of 24 independent
car rental operators with 60 locations and 800 vehicles. In
1954, they became the first car rental brand to offer one-way
rentals for those wishing to rent cars in one town and leave
them in another. In 1959 they incorporated as a for-profit corporation
and quickly established for itself an identity as "the best
in localized, personal service". National became the first car
rental company to bring computers into daily reservation operations
when it equipped its regional reservation offices with the "Telemax"
computer system in 1966. During the coming years National continued
to grow and evolve, and in 1987 introduced the industry's first,
comprehensive frequent-renter program, "Emerald Club", along
with the "Paperless Express Rental Agreement". This made car
rental much faster by using information stored in a computer
to process the whole transaction in seconds. National continued
to develop ways to make the car rental process more efficient.
Innovations included the "Emerald Aisle," where members select
their own cars and are on their way without filling out any
paperwork, and the "Choice Rental Process" which gives all National
customers the ability to choose their own vehicle. For those
who are not enrolled in Emerald Club, the company started the
"QuickRent" service in 2002, which offers customers the ability
to bypass the counter when they complete their rental transaction
online.
National
offers a selection of special services and products to the business
traveler: the Affinity & Association Program, which offers
club and association members a host of special benefits designed
to make their time on the road easy and comfortable; the Business
Program, which offers travelers great rates
on car rentals - along with the consistently high level of service;
the Meeting & Convention Program, which is dedicated to
the success of a meeting; and the Government & Military
Program, which offers discounted rates to U.S.
Government and Department of Defense travelers on official business
with authorized travel orders.
Through
its tremendous growth, National today remains a leader in both
business and leisure car rentals.
