Budget
Rent A Car System, Inc. is the owner and franchiser of one of
the largest car and truck rental agencies in the world. It is
a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cendant Corporation (primarily
a provider of real estate and travel services), which also owns
Avis Rent A Car. Budget appeals to the value-minded renters
as it offers quality vehicles and a rewarding rental experience.
It has over 1,900 locations worldwide.
Budget
Rent A Car was founded in 1958 by Morris Mirkin. The company
name ‘Budget' was chosen to appeal to the "budget-minded" or
“value-conscious” renter. In 1960, Budget Rent A Car Corporation
was formed in Chicago and the company grew rapidly thereafter,
both nationally and internationally. In 1987, Budget went public
and announced an initial public offering of 3.2 million shares.
In 1997, Team Rental Group, Budget's largest U.S. franchisee,
bought Budget and changed its name to Budget Group, Inc. Budget
Group now began trading on the NYSE, but was de-listed from
the Exchange when Cendant Corporation (NYSE: CD) bought Budget
Rent A Car assets in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean,
Australia and New Zealand in the year 2002. Other worldwide
assets were sold to Avis Europe, Plc.
Budget
today has an upgraded industry-approved Amadeus Global Distribution
System to provide travel agents with real-time access to its
reservation system. Amadeus was added to provide a seamless,
transparent interface to all four of the industry's major global
distribution systems.
Budget
has two special programs: the “Budget Business Program,” a corporate
discount program that offers small and mid-sized businesses
low corporate rates, complimentary Fastbreak service with no
additional driver fees; and “Budget Pride,” a comprehensive
employee motivation program. Budget also partners with Mothers
Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to help promote its “Tie One On
For Safety” program.
